| From: No To Pipes Campaign <notopipes@only-one-planet.org> Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2003 00:08:06 -0400 JUNE 22, 2003 - AS NOMINATION TO USIP COMES BEFORE SENATE COMMITTEE PIPES ADVOCATES AN ESCALATED VIOLENT POLICY DISCARDING WARS RULES With Daniel Pipes nomination to the US Institute for Peace finally scheduled for consideration by the Senate HELP Committee an exceedingly consequential moment is upon us. So that no one has any doubt about where Pipes stands, today, on the verge of a vote on his nomination hes published a column in the New York Post which has been widely syndicated and circulated to right-wing groups around the country calling for an increasingly violent (and illegal policy under international law) abandoning of the rules of war. Excerpts are reproduced below as is an example of the echoes and amplifications by supporters appearing on his own website (and edited by him) that amount to calls for genocide. As expected, David Horowitz (FrontPageMag), Stanley Kurtz (National Review), Frank Gaffney (Center for Security Policy) and other right-wing extremists and special interest groups are putting the pressure on for the nomination to go through. A vote may take place on July 23 (tomorrow, Wednesday) or it may be postponed. Our petition signed by nearly 500 academics from universities across the country and some 4,500 co-signatories asks that if the nomination is not rejected on its face as it should be that public hearings be held. Weve presented a list of eminent academics and others eager to testify should that be necessary. We do not see how the Committee, if they do not reject the nomination, can simply ignore this much opposition without a public hearing. Peace! Say No To Pipes Campaign http://www.say-no-to-pipes.org Discarding Wars Rules., July 22, 2003 (NY Post and syndicated) Historically, writes Pipes States achieved power through their own labor and sacrifice....The same cannot be said of the threats emanating from the Muslim world How despite their general incompetence have they managed to do this? the West plays by a strict set of rules while permitting al Qaeda, the Palestinians and Saddam Hussein to play without rules... Had the United States retaliated in kind for 9/11...Islamic holy places would have been destroyed. Had Israelis followed the Arafat model of murderousness, the West Bank and Gaza would now be devoid of Palestinians...Had the West done to Iraq as Iraq did to Kuwait, the Iraqi polity would long ago have been annexed and its oil resources confiscated. Western restraint, in other words...encourages their bad behavior....For the West to reverse the process requires much tougher means than i t prefers to use... Pre-empt: Knock out...leaders...before then can do more damage. Rehabilitate: Dismantle their polities, then reconstruct along civilized lines. Impose a double standard: Act on the premise that the U.S. government alone is permitted to use force against other agents, who are not permitted to use force. In brief...Washington must be prepared to act...without rules... If wed used genocide the problem would have been solved years ago: Pipes has posted comments from supporters on his website about the article and the following is an excerpt from the first one that appears: If Israel, within the first year after Oslo, had warned Arafat that failure by him to stop launching terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens would result in the incineration of all of the so-called refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people - and then proceeded to actually bomb the camps - the problems would have been solved years ago. |
